TEDxBwaila will create a platform where various speakers will tackle prevailing issues, emerging thoughts, and ideas on a wide range of topics under the theme:

TINGATHE-WE CAN.

TEDxBwaila will focus up to 15 talks on topics like technology, innovation, youth development, good governance, and civic engagement.

About TED

TED began in 1984 as a conferencewhere Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almostall topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100languages. TED is a non-profit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the formof short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less).

Over the years, the concept hasopened to more community driven events running on the brand, guidelines andformat of the original TED called TEDx events. TEDx is a program of local,self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-likeexperience. The TEDx (where x = independently organized TED event)events arespreading ideas all over the world and are organised in different communitiesranging from cities, university campuses to companies who are licenced by TEDin the US.

About TEDx

In Malawi, the first ever TEDx event was held in 2014 at Crossroads Hotel under the name TEDxLilongwe providing a platform for talks on gender-based violence, technology, culture, innovations, and broad issues of governance. The talks from the event were uploaded on the TED website attracting thousands of views and initiating debates on the topical issues that were presented.

The Second TEDx event in Malawi took place in August 2016 under the theme ‘DEMAND’. It had a live audience of 200 people and over 500 people participating through satellite events organised in parallel to the main event. TEDxLilongwe 2016 featured 14talks on a diverse range of issues including a performance by Faith Mussa which attracted over 10,000 views within 48hrs of its upload on the TED website.

In March 2023, Malawi celebrated the return of the TED experience with TEDxBwaila, themed Think, Believe, Act. The event featured 11 inspiring speakers from diverse fields, attracting over 100 attendees, including professionals, students, entrepreneurs, activists, and artists. The gathering emphasized interactivity, self-expression, and networking, fostering a vibrant atmosphere for idea exchange and collaboration. ​ Medium TEDxBwaila 2023 has set a strategic roadmap to sustain its impact, focusing on expanding partnerships, amplifying media collaborations, strengthening community engagement, curating TEDx Salon events, and engaging with youth and educational institutions. These efforts aim to inspire, connect, and empower individuals and communities in Malawi, contributing to the country's future development. ​

The platform will present a stage for passion, laughter, beauty, ingenuity and ideas that are capable of changing the world.
